Planting More Potatoes. 3.12.19
Man (Daniel), you must really love Rufus to go to all that trouble to feed him! Makes me feel guilty just buying Dot bagged dog food, usually from Rural King (Alpo and others). I'll check the labeling today. Never thought of egg shells. But I know she rummages through my compost pile where I toss my leftovers, including egg shells.
And yes, she stays indoors during this cold snap. (Me, too!)
Oh! I can't believe it ... yes I can, with simply a little bit of imagination! Is there any healthy commercially made dog food that can be trusted? Since I don't do any of the marketing anymore, perhaps I need to become the dog food producer in the family.?
Bertold, what do you feed your?animals??
Thanks to you both!?
Daniel - you are so right about Chinese dog food. Our Tilly, no longer with us, all of a sudden was showing kidney problems on her blood test. We have a genius vet, and he said it didn't look to him like old age degeneration (even though she was 13 years old). He asked if we gave them any food made in China. We'd gotten some from Costco. We stopped giving it to them, and her kidney function went back to normal. Costco gave us the money back for the food, but they didn't stop selling it.
Tell Rufus that he has an extraordinary chef working for him!
I like the idea of creating healthy food for pets; I just Googled "healthy dog food recipe" and I see some important information to read. I have lots of eggshells; the family eats a lot of eggs.?
I think we might be babysitting?a yellow tabby cat this week, at least that is what I think I see scooting outside my bedroom door. If so, it is "Clyde," my granddaughter's cat.?
By-the-way, did I tell you I?have a new, seventh, great-grandchild? His name is?Brenton George S____, and he weighed 9# 10 Oz. Ouch!
Your woodlot sounds very inviting, a nice way to spend a warm afternoon.?
Rufus seems quite attached to you, Loam.
Spud, thanks for the information on seeds and temperatures for sprouting.
Daniel, I am going o get heating mats and start plants in the house this year and transplant to the greenhouse and see how that works.?
Shame on me, I forgot your new companion's name. Rufus, I think. He looks very healthy, as do your orchids! I can tell you give them all loving care.?
Both of you, Danial and Spud, inspire me to keep trying.
I try to keep my watermelon seeds at 85 F (29 C) and that seems to make them sprout much faster. ?They also grow faster at that temperature.
I try to keep Muskmelon and corn at 80. ?
Here I am, tooting my horn about soils again; however, from all that I experienced as a gardener and all I know as a student of agriculture, soils prove to be the keystone of human survival on the planet. Two videos that just came into view are:?
Crisis, Hope, and Permaculture
SOIL Pt 4 How to GROW Nutrient DENSE Fruits & Vegetables No Till Garden Method Improvement Series.
It won't be long before I can get my?fingers into the soil again and start growing plants.?
Daniel, your photos present quite a splendid view of your seed growing operation. Let me know if you have an opinion?on the best light to use.?
Spud, do you find heating pads help you sprout your seeds??I won't start seeds until Feb, which isn't far away. I think I will get me a heating pad for the trays.?
My?Newport Washington planting zone is in Hardiness Zones 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, and 6b. There are so many microclimates in this part of the state and we have so many influences on the topology, it requires?flexibility and experience to know exactly which one fits. I think I will use Zone?5 for this year.?
It's been quite a few years since I used the LED grow lights, so I don't remember exactly, but I think they grew things well.
I got lazy and stopped growing seeds in pots for several years, then last year I started growing them in my small greenhouse with a heating cable under them.
So, my LED grow lights have been sitting idle for quite a while.
